Workflow phases can be defined as part of the overall process description. Phases are found under Resources as outlined below:

Phases in DCR Designer
With DCR Portal 7.6.2 phases can be displayed directly in DCR Designer. Click the OFF button to the right of phases above and select the with (2, 3 or 4 activities) of the phase area.

When you view the graph in DCR Designer the phases are displayed in the top of the whiteboard:

Using phases makes it easier to design your process and community about the process later on. The current phase of a process correspond to how we talk about the cases in a particular phase, e.g. the cases or instances awaiting approval or pay-out.
Visually placing the activities within the phase they belong to makes it easier to understand the process and how it evolves over time.
Phases in simulation
Phases are shown in simulation in the DCR Simulation screen in the upper left corner.
The actual phase is calculated as:
- If any pending (and included) activities associated with a phase - the minimum phase
- If no pending activities- the largest phase associated with an executed event (and included)
- If anything is enabled - take the minimum phase of the enabled activities
- If nothing is is enabled - take the maximum phase of any executed activity
- If no pending or executed or enabled activities - the minimum phase defined in the graph - if any
