Predictive process monitoring assist the end user in the IT system by providing recommendations and insight into what to do next. It can be used to inform the user whether their work is currently on the highway or on a country road, i.e. whether their work follows common work patterns or if the work for some reason is un-common. Knowing work is un-common enables the user to pay more attention to the work. Predictive Process Monitoring might even be able to suggest what to do to bring the work back to the highway.
Using various advances in AI and other technologies DCR Simulator now supports the ability to make recommendations to the end user about the next step.

Notice the new web part, "DCR AI Guide" in the top in the center area of DCR Simulator.
It shows the next suggested activity, if any is found, with the highest probability. The user can choose other flows and see what is recommended in that situation.
Clicking the suggested activity label will display the next step to the goal as a flow:

The suggested next step is shown in blue.
The algorithm use the stream of the case, i.e. the historical activities executed, to calculate the next potential steps. This is sometimes referred to as online process mining, where we do not have the full log of the object available, but only the part to the current state of the object.
You can build your own DCR AI Guide as outlined here.
